We are pleased to announce the completion and publication of several significant projects and collaborations from earlier this year. Our publishing atelier had the privilege of partnering with the artistic teams behind the Pavilion of Finland and the Pavilion of Singapore for the ongoing Biennale Arte 2024 in Venice. Both projects present deeply engaging explorations of sensorial and ecosocial questions.
The Finnish Pavilion, The pleasures we choose, curated by Jussi Koitela and Yvonne Billimore (commissioned and produced by Frame Contemporary Art Finland), features works by artists Pia Lindman, Vidha, Saumya, and Jenni-Juulia Wallinheimo-Heimonen. The exhibition explores the complex interplay of bodies in space, materiality, and ecological narratives, inviting visitors to consider the choices that shape our collective futures. The accompanying publication, also entitled The pleasures we choose, is a delicate object designed by Finnish designer Samuli Saarinen, and features texts and visual content by Jos Boys, Mel Y. Chen, Rosalyn D’Mello, Satu Herrala, Jesal Kapadia, Pia Lindman, Hardeep Mann, Sanni Purhonen, Vidha Saumya, and Jenni-Juulia Wallinheimo-Heimonen.
Meanwhile, the Singapore Pavilion’s Seeing Forest, an exhibition by artist Robert Zhao Renhui that was curated by Haeju Kim (and commissioned and produced by the Singapore Art Museum), offers a contemplative exploration of the unexpected and powerful ways in which various species and habitats converge in urban settings. The exhibition is further expanded with the free publication Seeing Forest, which features rich visual material from Zhao’s time in Singapore’s unique secondary forests, along with commissioned texts by Jeffrey Kastner, Marcus Yee, Yong Ding Li, and others. A central “Reader” section presents a chronology of texts and excerpts by Nathaniel Cantley, Joshua Comaroff & Ong Ker-Shing, Richard T. Corlett, Max Ernst, Matthew Gandy, Jamaica Kincaid, and Farish A. Noor.
Although each exhibition presents a unique perspective, the companion publications—The pleasures we choose for the Finland Pavilion and Seeing Forest for the Pavilion of Singapore—share a compelling focus on the dynamic interactions of living entities, conviviality, and the ways in which bodies inhabit and transform space.
We are incredibly proud of these collaborations. You can find out more about the publications, available in print and open-access formats, at the links above.
The Venice Biennale Arte 2024 is open until 24 November 2024—don’t miss the chance to experience these exhibitions and our books firsthand.
