About K. Verlag
K. Verlag is a Berlin-based publishing atelier advancing new forms of the book-as-exhibition. Over the past fifteen years, we have built a distinct program engaging complex planetary and sociopolitical questions through artistic practice, storytelling, and theory, with a sustained commitment to intersectional and socioecological perspectives and to underrepresented voices.
Working internationally with artists, authors, curators, and institutions, we develop publications in which conceptual rigor and experimental design are inseparable—treating form, writing, visual language, material decisions, political orientation, and public discourse as mutually shaping elements. Each book is approached not as documentation or a neutral container for ideas, but as an artistic and critical work in its own right.
Our process thereby enables publications that often sit between fields: between research and poetics, archive and imagination, institutional reinvention and the minor cosmopolitanism of transcultural coalition-building. We work within a tradition of small and independent artistic publishing defined by a commitment to critical content, editorial-design vision, and publishing as a pluriversal practice of space, time, thought, and sensuality. Each publication emerges from collaborative structuring, including co-investment by commissioning partners or third-party grants, sustaining the editorial, material, and artistic quality for which K. Verlag is recognized.
In 2022, we launched a new series of artist monographs, Processing Process, while our first serial sextet, the intercalations: paginated exhibition series—commissioned by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt as part of Das Anthropozän Projekt—concluded with the release of its final volume: intercalations 6 – These Birds of Temptation. With the close of 2024, we inaugurated a new translation series, Pensées soignées, dedicated to relaying how intellectuals and activists in the non-Anglophone world are thinking about care and caring about thought.
K. Verlag is a three-time recipient of the Deutscher Verlagspreis (German Publishing Prize) in 2020, 2023, and 2025, and has been recognized by the Kurt Wolff Stiftung. Individual titles have received international distinctions, including Stiftung Buchkunst’s “Most Beautiful Books” (2018), the Ontario Association of Art Galleries Book Design Award (2019), and the J.B. Jackson Book Prize in Landscape Studies (2024).
Together with our collaborators, we understand our work, and the publications and exchanges that emerge from it, as both aesthetic propositions and infrastructural commitments: material forms of shared inquiry oriented toward more vibrant, liberatory, and ecologically responsive futures.
K. Verlag was initially co-founded in 2011 by Dr. Anna-Sophie Springer and Charles Stankievech. From 2015–25, Anna-Sophie has been the sole operator, director, and manager of K. Verlag from her studio in Berlin-Lichtenberg. In 2025 it was converted to K. Verlag GmbH. The publishing atelier does not hold any subsidiaries or offices in other locations.
