About K. Verlag
K. Verlag is a Berlin-based publishing atelier advancing new forms of the book-as-exhibition. We collaborate internationally with artists, authors, and institutions to develop publications whose conceptual rigor and experimental design open radical aesthetic and discursive interventions.
Our synthetic editorial-design process insists on the mutuality of content and form, enabling us to rethink and reshape contemporary political, ecological, and theoretical ambitions through the lens of art and printed matter. The books we produce are often situated between fields—between research and poetics, archive and imagination, institution and intertextuality. We are part of a tradition of small and independent publishing defined not by commercial or financial self-sufficiency, but by a commitment to critical content, editorial-design vision, and publishing as a pluriversal practice of space, time, thought, and sensuality. Each publication emerges from a model of collaborative structuring, including co-investment by commissioning partners or third-party grants. This ensures the editorial, material, and artistic quality for which K. Verlag is recognized.
In 2022, we launched a new series of artist monographs, Processing Process, while our first serial sextet, the intercalations: paginated exhibition series—commissioned by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt as part of Das Anthropozän Projekt—concluded with the release of its final volume: intercalations 6 – These Birds of Temptation. With the close of 2024, we inaugurated a new translation series, Pensées soignées, dedicated to relaying how intellectuals and activists in the non-Anglophone world are thinking about care and caring about thought.
In July 2023, K. Verlag was again named a recipient of the prestigious Deutscher Verlagspreis (previously in 2020), which is awarded annually to honor outstanding small and independent publishers by the Federal Ministry of Culture.
Over the last decade, K. Verlag has developed a growing body of publications that engage with the entangled urgencies of our planetary condition. Together with our collaborators, we see these works as part of a shared commitment to building a more vibrant, feminist, and ecologically responsive world.
K. Verlag was initially co-founded in 2011 by Dr. Anna-Sophie Springer and Charles Stankievech. Since 2015, Anna-Sophie has been the sole operator, director, and manager of K. Verlag from her studio in Berlin-Lichtenberg and the publishing atelier does not hold any subsidiaries or offices in other locations.
