EURO—VISION: Undergrounding the Critical Material explores processes of extraction beyond the physical removal and displacement of minerals, extending to their financialization, management, and the policies that regulate and drive their circulation. Using the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act as a framework, this exciting publication gathers practitioners from diverse disciplines to engage with three key themes: the genealogies of resource extraction, valuation paradigms, and the terms and scientific concepts that shape their passage.
In the context of EURO–VISION, “undergrounding” signifies a critical and creative reassessment of the practices and technologies surrounding resource- and commodity-oriented relations. Counter-acting the empty space of graphs and Cartesian narratives, undergrounding instead questions what extraction mobilizes, how it operates, and how it is entangled with other forms of structural violence. Simultaneously, it examines the material poetics and transformative potential of minerals, aiming to create space for reflecting on the complexities through which they emerge and coexist.
The book is released in the Processing Process series and includes interviews with scholars, practitioners, economists, lawyers, activists, and journalists, critically interrogating the “extractive gaze” embedded in European Union institutions and policies. These contributions are complemented by commissioned texts from renowned authors and visual essays drawn from FRAUD’s research-led inquiry into the management of critical minerals.
Limited-Edition Publication & Silkscreen Prints: A Fundraising Campaign
A limited edition of 50 copies of the EURO—VISION publication features a hand-made intaglio print book jacket infused with phosphorescent phosphate pigment developed by FRAUD in collaboration with the chemistry lab at Loughborough University during a residency at RADAR. The pigment, synthesized from Triple Superphosphate fertilizer, originates from OCP’s Bou-Craa mine in occupied Western Sahara—the world’s most concentrated phosphate deposit. Listed as a critical mineral on both the EU and UK critical materials lists, the phosphate rock was doped with Europium to produce its distinctive magenta glow. This material and color are also used in security features on EUR and GBP banknotes, visible under UV light.
This limited edition, wrapped in the phosphor-printed poster object, further highlights the thematic and material significance of the project. Its purchase directly helps to offset the costs of producing the book, which is available now for pre-order and will be shipped as soon as possible in 2025.
Triplesuperphosphate, FRAUD, 2024
Four-layers silkscreen print on acid-free paper, approx. A1-format, edition of 30, colors varying
These silkscreen prints layer a scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of a grain of Triple Superphosphate fertilizer with a historical photograph of the site where the phosphate was originally mined. The archival image, sourced from Spain’s Geological and Mining Institute, depicts the landscape prior to the start of mining operations and features the Árbol de Bu-Craa (Tree of Bou-Craa). Historically, these acacia trees served as vital desert navigation markers for trading caravans. The former location of this tree is now the site of the Bou-Craa mine, operated by the Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP). This mine remains a key resource for the global agribusiness industry. Triplesuperphosphate, FRAUD, 2024
Two-layered silkscreen print on Fabriano acid-free paper, approx. A3-format, edition of 55
Similarly to the larger print, this piece overlays an electron microscope scan (SEM) of a grain of triple superphosphate fertiliser (royal blue) with the location where the phosphate was mined (fluo orange). The editions of these A1 and A3 posters are launched as part of a joint fundraising campaign to support this project and its broader inquiry into critical minerals. The larger-format print comes in four different color variations and posters are shipped at random depending on availability. All benefits flow directly into the production of the book—and prints will be shipped to you immediately.
FRAUD (Audrey Samson, Françîcco Gayardo, Gris Perla Amor, and Jefa Papi Chulo) is an undisciplinary collective whose practice interrogates UK and European legal systems that perpetuate resource- and commodity-oriented relations. Over the past four years, as part of their ongoing project EURO—VISION, FRAUD has critically examined the UK’s Critical Minerals Strategy and the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act to inspire alternative cultural practices, political imaginations, and networks of mutuality and worldmaking. Former Somerset House Studios residents and current Stanley Picker Fellows (2024), in 2023 FRAUD was recognized as selected artists for Artangel’s Making Time. Their accolades also include the State of Lower Saxony – HBK Braunschweig Fellowship (2020) and the King’s College Cultural Institute Grant (2018). They have received commissions from Contemporary Art Archipelago (2022), the Istanbul Design Biennial (2020), RADAR Loughborough (2020), and the Cockayne Foundation (2018). FRAUD’s work is held in the permanent collections of the European Investment Bank Institute (Luxembourg) and the Art and Nature Center – Beulas Foundation (Spain).
Michaela Büsse is an interdisciplinary researcher and practitioner based in Berlin. Her research explores environmental speculation and emerging material and territorial configurations shaped by planetary urbanization and the climate crisis.
